About the profession

Pharmacists are part of a multidisciplinary team
of medical staff and allied health professionals
that seek to provide optimal care for patients
and carers. Pharmacy is a rewarding career for
those interested in the health and wellbeing of
people in primary, secondary and tertiary care
settings. Pharmacy offers diverse career options in
traditional e.g. community and hospital settings,
and non‑traditional settings.

Day-to-day tasks

On any given day a hospital Pharmacist may:

  • be responsible for ensuring safe use of medicines
  • fill and dispense medical prescriptions for in patients and out patients
  • meet with patients to discuss the current medication they have been prescribed and how to take it
  • check whether the current prescribed medication works with other medication they may already be taking
  • work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure that the best medication is prescribed for the whole of patient health
  • perform a number of health screening tests, in some cases
  • attend relevant professional development training to maintain currency of practice.

How do I become a ...

To become a Pharmacist you must complete an undergraduate course in pharmacy, an intern year and successfully complete the Pharmacy Board Registration examinations. This can be achieved through undertaking a Bachelor degree in the discipline, or by entering into a Masters program with an approved undergraduate degree.

Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours degree will develop a strong foundation in basic and pharmaceutical sciences core skills which will be integrated with contemporary knowledge and application of pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice. The University of New England is the first university in Australia to offer a  Pharmacy degree by off campus study.
